We are constantly rearranging our little apartment trying to squeeze every usable inch out of the limited space. After trying so many different combinations, we could use your help. We have a feeling that we’re going to need a new piece of furniture (maybe an entertainment center?), but we really don’t want to spend the money. We’re just looking for that extra bit of feng shui to make our place feel better.
Here’s what our place looks like:
and here’s the furniture we have:
With two little kids, we need as much floor space as we can muster. We don’t have cable, so the TV can float pretty much anywhere. We do have cable internet, though, which limits our options on the desk. However, if the layout is great enough, I’m willing to finally buy a wireless router (which I really should have done by now anyway). Carol’s sewing machine lives on the table and we use the bottom of the nook to store toys.
Here’s what it looks like right now:
The CD rack and fold-down writing desk are in our bedroom, which works pretty well. Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Desgn the perfect living space for our little family.

I’m bored today so I’m totally doing this — if anyone wants an illustrator file with all the bits to drag around, get in touch.
Fighting urge to put TV in the closet. Unless nook has casters…

Well, I know when change is an improvement and when it’s simple shuffling deck chairs - and my changes weren’t improving anything. Given what you’ve got - and especially given where your co-ax is coming in for the cable TV - I think you’re doing a heck of a job. Now, if the cable was negotiable, I’d say put the dinner table in the area with lots of window action, and the TV watching where the table is now.

Good thinkin’ Lincoln! uhh… i mean Ben! That how we had it set up for almost a year. The sofa (we only had the love seat then) under the window facing the kitchen and used the space under the bar for storage/tv. Then we flipped it. Sofa under the bar. That worked well too except we were squinting a lot looking toward the window light. Or maybe its that we have only owned a 14″ tv. hmmm….. maybe we’ll move around again next week!

Well, I say you should sell all the furniture and get a ferris wheel, and some goats. Oh! And a cotton candy maker. The ferris wheel can go where the Couch is, and then the petting zoo would be where the table is, but you’d probably need a gate. And you can put the cotton candy maker in the kitchen, because you don’t want the house getting dirty with cotton candy!

That is the best idea probably ever. I am calling the goat farm as we speak!

OK, so I am a secret blog lurker. Actually I had your blog bookmarked from a long time ago when Jesh was still doing work for me. As I was cleaning up my menu’s I decided to drop in a see what fantastic design ideas Ethan has thought up and displayed on his blog and read this entry about apt redesigns. Which brings me to the point in topic
Google bought a product called sketch-up which it offers FREE!. There is a MAC version that you can download and it is a breeze to use (took me 15 minutes to learn). Instead of just floor space, this product will let you redesign in 3D! I have used it on the last couple of illustrations I’ve done to find the perfect camera angles to draw from. I know of two set designers who use it to block out scenes for commercials. (the ultimate story board). Just thought you would like take it to the next level!
