After reading through a recent Time magazine, I wanted to try some of those modern photo efects everybody is doing. It treally makes the pictures pop…

I described how I did it below the fold…
What I did:
I layered the original photo on top of itself using a “Screen” overlay. That universally lightened the image and I erased everything but the shadow areas (making the lighting on their faces more even).
Using the original image, I added another layer with a “Multiply” overlay. This darkened everything and I erased around their heads, giving them the glow.
I added another original image layer using a “Soft Light” overlay. I added a “Film Grain” (Grain:1, Highlight Area:0, Intensity:0) then removed the grain from their skin (so their skin looks extra soft). The “Soft Light” also made the background shadows darker.
Then I added an original image layer with a “Color Burn” overlay. This dramatically deepened the shadows. Again, I removed the darkness from their faces and skin.
I flattened this collection and then layered it on top of itself. I added a “Gaussian Blur” (4 pixels) to the top layer then erased the blur from their faces. I duplicated this top layer and added a “Screen” overlay to bring out the color (on Elliott’s, this Screened top layer was set to only 25% opacity since the background color was already very bright).
I really should have made screenshots of the process, but I didn’t think it would turn out so cool. I was just bored.
As always, high-res versions over at Flickr.

Cool stuff. It really does make their faces POP. What program were you using?
Leave it to you guys to find a way to make your super cute kids even cuter.

Yeah, that was all in Photoshop.
I forgot to add some minor details like using the Healing tool, the Dodge tool, the Sponge tool, etc., but because I typed the instructions after I actually did it, I forget when and where I used them.
