Ethan, I think my frustration is a lack of knowledge of what the excitement and enthusiasm is about. Is it about getting out of Iraq, healthcare, his smile, the word “change” and “hope”, just that he is a democrat, or what? I don’t have much against Obama, but I don’t see much to get excited over either. Maybe you could write a post or email me with a list of what you consider makes him extraordinary. And I’m genuinely interested. I’m not being snarky. :)

I like that idea. I’ll write a post.

I will start with this, though: The way the Obama campaign performed in the primaries is a perfect example of why I have liked the man since 2004. They learned the rules, they played by the rules, they won by the rules. Since the 60’s, we have been suffering through an era of anything-goes politics. Where elections and social issues are decided by the courts. Where Congress will side-step written laws when they are inconvenient, then write themselves new laws that give them immunity for breaking the original laws. Where single issues define our candidates, but our government continually makes decisions that are, quite frankly, not in the best interest of the citizens. And, above all, we have now had two presidents in a row who not only acted as if, but stated explicitly that they are above the law.

I still believe in a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Despite the media coverage of the man himself, the Obama campaign is entirely about giving the government back to the people. That a presidential candidate would organize voter registration drives in states (like Utah and Alabama) which will absolutely vote against him, says more about the man than almost anything else.

Learn the rules, play by the rules, win by the rules. It’s refreshing.

Ethan, I still remember back at VRN forever ago you were reading an Obama book and when I asked who he was, completely clueless, you said “he’ll be our next president” without any hesitation or doubt… I have a feeling you still don’t have any hesitation or doubt :)
Although, I’m having doubt on how long I’ll keep my sanity with the DNC in town… Obama’s speech tonight is shutting down I-25… traffic is UNBELIEVABLE!

Anywho, just popping in… still check in every so often to see cute new pics! Hope all is well with yourself, Carol, and all the adorable ones.

“That a presidential candidate would organize voter registration drives in states (like Utah and Alabama) which will absolutely vote against him, says more about the man than almost anything else.”

I didn’t know that. Hey, Ethan, you would know the answer to this better than anyone else: is there a website dedicated to presenting an unbiased view of what each candidate represents? I’m going to actually start caring about who I vote for (better late than never, eh?), but I’m just not ready to wade through much of the mainstream-media info. (And having I-25 closed made all the peripheral highways horrible! It took 45 minutes to drive from Park Meadows to Wadsworth on C-470! :P )

My favorite line of attack from John McCain and the Republicans is when they lose their temper over the amount of excitement and enthusiasm this campaign is generating. Millions of people have come out to show their support, have volunteered, and have donated, and the McCain campaign runs ads attempting to mock us as if it’s a bad thing that the democratic process is finally working again. As if the race for the presidency is determined by who is the more ordinary of the candidates. Well, we’ve suffered through eight years of an ordinary president and we cannot afford another four. It’s no secret that Barack Obama is an extraordinary human being. It’s time we had an extraordinary president.
