The Smiths

The basics you probably already know. This site is maintained by Ethan and Carol in an effort to stay in touch with our friends and family around the country (actually… these days, around the world). Living so far away from the people we love is hard, especially as kids are born and grow up. We update it a lot, but it’s never enough.

We do our best to post a lot of photos, since the grandparents visit the site often to see how their beautiful grandbabies are evolving. But probably the entries that are the most fun are the movies. Ethan is a dork, so along with wasting time designing and redesigning the site, he makes very short films (usually about the kids).

I say “he,” but that’s silly, because I (Ethan) am writing this. I usually take care of the technical stuff and this article qualifies as “technical stuff” (though it should be noted that Carol is becoming very technically savvy herself). I’m also the one responsible for the Music for Steve pages. Carol’s entries are typically more fun to read and she’ll occasionally write a review of some extremely random product. It’s fun.

Speaking of technical stuff, there are some important thank you’s that need to go around (most because I extremely appreciate the help, others because I’m legally required to do so). The site is designed using Wordpress, which is a billion times better than the CMS I was using before. After installing Wordpress, my friend Steve pointed me to a template called Foliage (Please visit Steve’s site, he’s amazing and we love his family). Foliage was originally written by Derek Punsalan, who is an amazing programmer. I highly recommend any of his Wordpress themes, if that’s what’s you’re looking for.

You’ll notice that I use vimeo for our videos. In principle, it’s like YouTube, but vimeo is a smaller, friendlier community with a better interface. I’m also using the FamFamFam icon theme Silk. Like everyone else on the tubes, I fell in love with them and use them as often as I can.

One final plug: We use Mint to keep track of the activity on our site. Aside from being extremely cool, it gives us all kinds of great information like how many people visited our site and where they came from.

Okay, enough technical stuff. If you actually read this far, you have wasted a ton a time.

Thank you for wasting your time here.
